As part of their ongoing Life Skills lessons, learners in Palm Class at Coombswood School recently took part in a practical and purposeful project: designing and building bird boxes to help support the local bird population.
The activity not only introduced key woodworking techniques but also gave learners the chance to make a positive contribution to their environment. The finished bird boxes are specially designed to provide safe nesting sites and sheltered roosting spots for birds, particularly valuable in areas where natural habitats like hollow trees are limited.
This hands-on experience encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and environmental awareness, reinforcing the values at the heart of Coombswood’s Life Skills curriculum.
Principal Snita Verma commented:
“This project gave our learners the chance to connect practical skills with real-world purpose. It’s a fantastic example of how Life Skills at Coombswood go beyond the classroom, helping our young people grow as responsible, thoughtful members of their community.”
The bird boxes will be placed in school gardens and surrounding green spaces to encourage more birdlife and support local biodiversity.
