Teigan Poyner – Teaching Assistant
“Starting my first role after completing my degree in Psychology in Education, I couldn’t have imagined a better place to begin my career than Coombswood School. As someone who had never worked in a school before—apart from placements—I was naturally a little nervous. But from day one, the support I’ve received from my colleagues has been incredible. I’ve felt welcomed, encouraged, and truly part of a team that genuinely cares about the students and each other.
Working as a Teaching Assistant at Coombswood has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I’ve grown both professionally and personally, and I’ve learnt so much about education and supporting children with special educational needs.
The environment is nurturing, the staff are passionate, and the impact we make together is something I’m proud to be part of every day.
I feel incredibly lucky that this was my first job after university—I honestly wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.”
Nathan Knowles - Teaching Assistant, Lead for PE, and Health and Safety
“Working at Coombswood School offers a unique and rewarding experience—especially for those passionate about supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and mild learning difficulties.
Being here allows me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of learners facing unique challenges. Coombswood is deeply committed to fostering a supportive work environment, prioritising professional development, and taking a child-centred approach.
I began my journey at Coombswood as a Teaching Assistant, supporting learners with a range of SEN needs, including SEMH and Autism. From the outset, I was drawn to the school’s nurturing atmosphere and its strong emphasis on building positive relationships with learners.
As time went on, I took on more responsibility and developed a keen interest in the physical and emotional well-being of our students. With the encouragement and trust of the Leadership Team, I progressed to become the Health and Safety Lead, and later, the PE Lead.
What has meant the most to me is being encouraged to bring my personal passions into my role—particularly my belief in the power of physical activity to support mental and emotional well-being. This journey has been incredibly rewarding, both professionally and personally.
Coombswood isn’t just a school—it’s a community that grows and thrives together.“
